This is an important article because it is the first time I have heard of a U.S. citizen being prosecuted and convicted in a bribery case in Panama. Now, what about those he bribed here in Panama? Will we see justice served here as well or will it be business as usual?
Va. man sentenced for Panama bribes
RICHMOND, Va. -
A Virginia man will serve seven years in
prison for bribing Panamanian government officials to win a
contract to maintain buoys and lighthouses outside the Panama
canal.
Charles Paul Edward Jumet pleaded guilty in November to conspiracy to make corrupt payments to foreign officials and lying to investigators about the scheme. The plot involved paying $212,000 in bribes between 1997 and 2000 to secure $18 million in contracts for his Virginia Beach firm Ports Engineering Consults.
At his sentencing Monday, U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson also ordered the 53-year-old Fluvanna County resident to pay $15,000 in fines.
Another executive, John Warwick, also pleaded guilty. He's scheduled to be sentenced May 18.
