The Minister of Agriculture, Jorge Arango announced last week an important step for Panama to become a “Food Hub” of the Americas – Panama is negotiating the contract with an American multinational to package and then re-export rice.
“The idea is to bring rice in bulk, then pack it, store and distribute all at once”, however the Minister avoided specifying the name of the multinational, but he affirmed it is one of the “world’s largest” rice sellers. He also noticed that this contract is part of the bigger plan to turn the country into a “Food Hub”.
In case if Panama will turn into a regional re-export center, this could motivate local producers and generate many job positions. For example, each boat docking, even though the smallest of the kinds, generates between 80 and 90 jobs, added the Minister.
